DS VIRGIN RACING IN DETERMINED MOOD FOR MARRAKECH

DS Virgin Racing is eager to show its true capabilities in Marrakech, after missing out on win at season-opener in Hong Kong

In Race 2 the team is focused on capitalising on the undoubted pace of the car and drivers and getting points on the board.

The DS Virgin Racing team travel to Marrakech determined to reverse their upset in Hong Kong.  Despite both cars qualifying on the second row of the grid, the team came away from the race empty handed and are looking toward race 2 as Formula E debuts in Africa. Marrakech is a track of significance to the team. “I’ve raced and won here three times before with the WTCC” explains Jose Maria Lopez. “It was a touch narrow. But then again, a Formula E car takes up less room than a WTCC car, so it should be a good fight.”
The team’s experience here isn’t limited to its drivers. DS’ engineers have a history of racing and winning in Marrakech, and are confident this will give the team an edge. Our track simulator testing revealed that the top achievable speed for a Formula E car is 210 km/h, faster than WTCC’s 205 km/h. The track is a dramatic departure from Hong Kong – twelve turns to Hong Kong’s nine and over half a kilometre longer. As the longest track in the series, the teams’ challenge for Marrakech will be tactical battery preservation – something that Sam Bird displayed masterfully during Hong Kong, leading the pack for several laps before the car change.

The track isn’t the only place where key strategies are being played out. The Marrakech ePrix coincides with the Cop 22 Summit: a meeting of the world’s leaders on sustainability and climate change. In tandem, DS Virgin Racing will be hosting an Innovation Summit in front of its garage on November 10th, featuring an international panel discussing EVs and sustainable tech. “We’ve gone to space, we’ve done biofuel flight and we were the first to go non-stop solo around the world. Virgin is all about making sustainability fast.” States Team Principal Alex Tai.

A PROMISING FIRST RACE FOR THE DS VIRGIN RACING TEAM

After a positive first half of the day, the first race of the Formula E Season 3 ended with a large disappointment.

In Hong Kong, Sam Bird lost his first place due to a technical problem during the car changeover. José María López has been left with severe handling issues after contact at the first corner.

DS Virgin Racing is delighted to announce that double FIA WTCC World Champion José María López will partner British driver Sam Bird for the 2016-17 FIA Formula E season.

33-year old López will replace Jean-Eric Vergne and will be a new addition to the grid in Formula E. The Argentinian comes with an impressive pedigree as current world touring car champion and leads the 2016 FIA WTCC World Championship with 244 points, having claimed six race wins already this season.

Prior to touring cars, ‘Pechito’, as he is known to his friends, had a successful single-seater career, winning the Formula Renault Italian Championship in 2002 and a Formula Eurocup FR V6 title in 2003.  He was a test driver in Formula One in 2006.

Following the announcement, Sam Bird said, “This season has been another positive step forward and I really believe that DS Virgin Racing is going places. We showed consistent pace in the second half of the season and if we can convert that into more race wins, then we should have a car that is capable of challenging for the championship next season.”

Xavier Mestelan Pinon, Head of DS Performance, said: “José is a fantastic addition to DS Virgin Racing, he’s a world-class driver that has dominated WTCC for the past two seasons and is currently leading the ongoing season. He has worked with us closely at DS Performance on our season three car. After gaining third position in the Team Championship for our first year in FIA Formula E, we believe that he and Sam will form a strong partnership and make it possible to fight for the overall championship next season.”

The third season of the FIA Formula E Championship will start on 9th October in Hong Kong.
